Course Overview

This is for those who are looking for a more detailed understanding of a broad range of subjects relating to the animal management industry. Our large and varied animal collection of exotic and domestic species offer excellent practical hands-on learning opportunities alongside theory-based lessons.

During this programme, you will be expected to undertake a block of work experience which will allow you to broaden your knowledge, understanding and skills in practical industry live situations.

During the first year of the Extended Certificate in Animal Management you will be provided with knowledge of the following units Animal Welfare and Ethics, Practical Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour, Animal Health and Diseases and Work Experience in the Animal Sector.

If you wish to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management course, you will be provided with an in-depth knowledge of the following units Animal Biology, Zoological Animal Health and Husbandry, Wildlife Conservation and Ecology, Principals of Animal Nursing and Investigative Research Project.

Learning for this course will take place via a combination of both theory and practical-based sessions within the classroom and the extensive Animal Collection at Hartpury College. During practical sessions, you will get to work with over 70 different species of animals including invertebrates, reptiles, mammals, aquatic and avian species. Classroom learning will be delivered via a combination of taught lessons, group work, independent research and the incorporation of guest speakers. As part of your course, you will also be required to undertake a work experience placement (number of hours dependent on course) within the animal industry to work alongside experts to develop your knowledge and skills within your chosen field of interest.

Assessment will take place via both internal and external assessment methods, including written assignments, oral presentations, practical and formal examinations.

What can you do after this course?

3 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, to include English Language or Mathematics.

You should expect some small costs for books and stationery. There will also be opportunities to take part in trips related to the topics you are studying. These trips incur a charge/are covered by the educational visits fee.

Students are required to pay a non-refundable educational visits fee at enrolment.

Students are required to refer to the kit list as they will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment while working within the animal collection.

Bursaries, scholarships and additional support

Can students progress onto a Level 3 T-levels course?

Yes, students must achieved a Merit in the Level 3 Extended Certificate course and have also achieved their Maths and English Language.

Can students who have not achieved their Maths or English Language GCSE's progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management?

Yes providing that have shown progression in their English or Maths lessons they will be considered however must achieve an overall grade of a Merit in the Level 3 Extended Certificate.

Is there an opportunity for learners to study English and/or Maths alongside their course to improve on their grades?

Yes, students will be considered on the course depending on their GCSE grades. As they will need to have allocated time within the academic timetable to attend lessons in these subjects in preparation for sitting exams/assessments at the end of the academic year. Learners will either be entered for Functional Skills or GCSE.

How much does the course cost?
